Interventional pain procedures

What are the benefits?

Interventional pain procedures can assist your patient(s) in the reduction of their pain intensity, facilitate rehabilitation and functional recovery. Pain procedures can have the additional advantage of reducing your patients need for medication and therefore any associated medication side effects. For some patients procedures can provide greater pain relief than medications alone and are much more precise by targeting the specific site of pathology. In some cases, pain procedures have been shown to promote healing (e.g. reabsorption of herniated intervertebral discs). Pain procedures can also be used when surgery is not an option.

Are pain procedures safe?

Interventional pain procedures, when selected appropriately, are a low-risk and minimally invasive option that can have profound and long-lasting effects in managing your patients’ pain. Interventional pain procedures are completed by appropriately trained and fully qualified Specialist Pain Medicine Physicians. Pain procedures are typically used as an option when first line treatments have failed, surgery is not an option or where the nature of your patients pain condition is likely to respond to an intervention first.

Where are pain procedures conducted?

Most of the Centre’s interventional pain procedures are day cases through one of the private hospitals and day procedure units in Perth. Pain procedures are usually completed under sedation and fluoroscopic guidance, which means there will also be an anaesthetist and radiographer on the day. There are a small number of procedures that can be conducted through the clinic at Anodyne. These are treatments that do not require sedation or an operating theatre (e.g. Botox, PRP, some nerve and joint steroid injections).
